Woolgar writes, “The act of writing creates marks on a surface. I compose these marks to highlight their gestural beauty rather than focus on the meaning of words. These images capture the inaudible echo that is our thoughts; the running script behind one’s eyes”.
Inspired by what thinking looks like, Ryan Woolgar layers free writing to obscure the meaning of words. This creates a network of marks that carry the essence of thought, no matter the message or the author. Ryan (b.1989) is a Milwaukee-based artist, who holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His work can often be found in restaurants and galleries in Wisconsin.
Selected exhibitions include: Continuum 2018: After 25 Years, Kenilworth Square East Gallery; 31 Emerge, Walker’s Point Center for the Arts; Drawing Attention, Gallery 224; Forward 2016: A Survey of Wisconsin Art Now, Charles Allis Decorative Arts Museum; 2nd Annual Figure Exhibition, Var Gallery; Kick a Hole Right in the Sky, UW Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery; 30x30x30, Var Gallery.
The Frank Juarez Gallery Artist-in-Residency Program was created to provide an environment designed to support the artist's creative development and output. This exhibition space is transformed into a working studio providing the artist access to this space, resources, and contacts. At the end of the 7-week residency the artist will have a closing reception. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, December 1 from 5-8pm.
